What’s happened
OFGEM the energy regulator has announced an increase in the Energy Price Cap of 54% from April 01.
This means that approximately 22 million customers will be paying more than half on top of what they’re already paying for their energy. This rise will plunge millions more households into fuel poverty.
An average family’s bill will increase by £693 a year if you’re on direct debit. If you’re on prepayment it will be even more, it will rise by on average £708 a year.
In effect for every £100 you spend on energy it will change to £154.
The Government’s response
All domestic electricity and gas consumers will receive a £200 discount on their bills in October. This money will be reclaimed at a rate of £40 a year for the next five years from your bill. This money is in effect a loan.
Households in Council Tax Bands (A-D) will receive a rebate of £150 on April 01. This is not a loan and will not be reclaimed by Government.
The Warm Homes discount scheme may be widened to more groups. Details have not been provided.
Local Councils will receive funds to help the vulnerable.
