Tip Top Money Saving Tips

TOP TIPS on How to save money and feel financially SAFE

With spiralling costs putting us at a 30 year high for the cost of living.  To help a little more, we’ve jotted down some quick wins which could make a bit by bit more difference to keeping MORE money in your account rather than the energy companies.

Did you know that half of our money spent on energy bills is absorbed by heating and hot water!

Wash clothes at 30 degrees instead of 40 degrees, you’ll be surprised over time how much money you will save. Hard to say exactly how much you will save, because people have different energy suppliers at different charges, but you will use 40% less energy on washing by doing this.

Draught proof your property. Remember when we used to have those long sausage cushions for the bottom of the doors? Bring ‘em back. Keep your windows closed and put draught proofing sealant round your doors and windows!

Turn down the thermostat on heating hot water.

Turn down the thermostat on the gas heating, but only to a comfortable level. Avoid feeling chilled or cold

Are you insulated? Your house that is.  If not, explore how you can be. Contact our Energy team for advice on 0113 2350276

Turn your fridges down – lots of people haven’t turned their fridges down since the summer, just check that yours isn’t on number 7 when it could be on number 3 for example.

Do you have a flask? Use it, put the hot water from the kettle in it so you don’t have to keep boiling the kettle.

Have you got those energy saving lightbulbs in a cupboard? Use them. Got any spare? Share them 😊. If you don’t have any we might find someone who can help you, so contact us.

Turn appliances off standby if you can.

Avoid blocking radiators with furniture or long curtains, let the heat get into your room instead of blocking it out. Central Heating and oil radiators need air flow, convection for the heat to move around the room/house.

Be neighbourly; check on each other. Remember the days when we used to call round and say ‘have you got a cup of sugar, to reciprocate with some milk’?

Get a Smart Meter to keep track of your energy usage, In the past Smart Meters have not been so great, but there’s new programming in them which means they can work  well with different providers.
